Training Approach and Structure at OSB

For a couple of years we have been working within a modified structure to support a more holistic way of training with less emphasis on the requirement to take ballet exams and more on the integration of dance appreciation and creativity into the development of classical technique.

As a lifelong student of the Cecchetti Classical Ballet Method I still believe there are huge benefits to working through this syllabus and we continue to offer training in this and exams for those who have attained the necessary proficiency. However, our aim is that all our pupils, regardless of whether they take exams or not, receive excellent training and have opportunities to perform together and explore their creativity.

At the current time, children are progressing from Pre-School Ballet to Reception Ballet, then into Primary Ballet followed by Standard 1 Ballet. After Standard 1, they go into Lower Junior Ballet, which is a non-syllabus technique class bridging the transition from young children’s ballet to more formal ballet training.  They will then progress into Grade 2 Ballet, which requires attendance twice a week.  Grade 3s and 4s have one syllabus lesson and one non-syllabus lesson per week; Junior Ballet.  Grades 5 and 6 have two lessons a week with a fair amount of non-syllabus work included and Grade 6 also have a half-hour pointe lesson.  Intermediate and Advanced 1 dancers have one syllabus lesson per week and one non-syllabus lesson; Company Class, which comes with a half-hour pointe lesson. Advanced 1 dancers also have an additional half-hour pointe lesson as part of their syllabus class.

Even if pupils do attend the syllabus class, it is not assumed that they wish to take the exam – this option is discussed the term before a planned exam session. This approach ensures that children are aware that they have a choice and that continuing their ballet training and taking part in shows and other creative activities is not dependent on passing ballet exams. Those with a true vocation and talent are of course encouraged and given every opportunity to increase their proficiency and experience professional level training.

Please do contact us if you have any questions regarding our training structure.
